Definition of WES (World Education Services)
A designated credential assessment body that converts Indian degrees into Canadian equivalency for PR points.
Why it matters in practice for applicants
World Education Services evaluates your Indian transcripts and degree, then issues a report stating their Canadian equivalent, which is what your education claim in Express Entry requires. The process involves documents from your university, takes several weeks, and gates your education points entirely, so it starts early in every PR plan. Other designated bodies exist, but WES is the most used for Canadian files.
Practical example and scenario
A three-year Indian bachelor's degree receiving a Canadian four-year bachelor's equivalency report, unlocking the education points the profile claimed.
Frequently asked questions
How long does a WES assessment take?
Typically several weeks after your university sends documents, so the assessment starts before language preparation ends, not after.
Do I need WES for a study permit?
No. WES is for PR and some work streams; study permits rely on direct university admissions.
